I was really surprised today when I saw a billboard advertising Coca Cola Life with stevia. This is a big step for Coke and one that trends towards better nutrition. I needed to investigate and determine if Coke has really turned the corner to make a product that enhances health instead of depleting health.
Unfortunately my review of the ingredients shows the second ingredient is still sugar and there is still an excessive amount of caffeine in this version of Coke. The list of ingredients are: carbonated water, cane sugar, caramel color, caffeine, phosphoric acid, and stevia. A little bit goes a long way when using stevia and it is the last ingredient, so is it really a different product?
Make note the first ingredient other than water is sugar and the third ingredient other than the caramel color is caffeine. Sugar and caffeine in the excesses that are in Coke is a combination that will send your nervous system in to a tizzy.
This is telling me that Coke is concerned about losing market share so they have added stevia to their product to try and make it appear to be a better product. Yes it does have fewer overall calories, but as you are learning from Mind Body Weight, it is not about the calories and this is still a highly addictive drink, not in a good way.
My message is to continue demanding higher standards in your food products so that businesses will respond. The small privately owned companies have already created so many amazing products that uphold standards of quality and enhance our health. We need the same response from the large conglomerates that control the food industry.
Yes I’m surprised that Coke has created this product. I’m glad that they are shifting. My memories of drinking Coke as a child is that it was an incredably refreshing drink, but buyer beware this is not a product that will be an addition to good health.
