How to Make a Salad into Comfort Food
When people describe vulnerabilities around food one word that often shows up is comfort food.
The qualities of comfort foods are creamy, soft, crunchy, salty, sweet and fried. High on the list are various forms of potatoes, pasta, cheese, chicken, and desserts.
To define a comfort food it would be any food that could be healthy on its own, but then it’s paired with too much of something to transport it into a more extreme version.
It’s often hot, but in the case of desserts it can be cold or cool.
For example a bowl of vanilla ice cream versus a bowl of ice cream with chocolate chips, chocolate syrup and whipped cream.
Mac and cheese is an all time favorite and is loaded with cheese, sometimes many varieties and extra cream, butter, and buttered bread crumbs… gooey, luscious and creamy.
I know that once the idea of a comfort food comes into view, it’s often tough to turn the tide back into a healthier orientation.
In this case, I thought we could work together to make a comfort salad.. We could get that great feeling of extreme satiation, and not have a three day set back.
Suggestions for the comfort salad:
A base of greens, either warm or cold. We can make a warm salad…one of the qualities of comfort foods or we can make a standard salad. If you chose standard, please have the greens at room temperature, not icy cold. OR maybe no greens.
Everything should be room temperature or a little warm. This is essential to creating comfort.

Fried green tomatoes, http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/fried-green-tomatoes-1 - swap out the vegetable oil for olive oil and the all purpose flour for whole grain
Nuts; for this salad you need macadamia nuts – crunchy and creamy at the same time
Fried string beans; flash fry these in olive oil with salt
Polenta fries; http://www.marthastewart.com/316031/baked-polenta-fries - baked, not even fried.
Sprinkle salad with cheese
A 1/4 -1/2 cup of brown rice, couscous or some other grain
Saute your vegetables, ike corn, mushrooms, asparagus or peppers, before adding them to the recipe, get come char on them so they release that smoky flavor.
You get the idea, find foods that are crunchy, salty, lots of texture and mix and match. You can create all of the comfort that you want swapping out negative, inflammation causing ingredients for a healthier version.
