The Common Cure for Holiday Burn Out

December 14, 2015

The month of December or maybe we should roll back to Thanksgiving, or maybe we should roll back to Halloween there are a lot of parties.

It is easy to start feeling depleted. Next step, you think a New Year's resolution will repair the lack of really nurturing foods that you've been eating and drinking.

I hear New Year's resolutions only last until January 15th and then you're back to the same cycle. So before all of this happens...take some time to nourish yourself and relax with two of the most empowering herbs in our gardens; ginger and turmeric.

I know you aren't growing them, but they are easy to come by....

AND when you consider the extraordinary healing and rejuvenating powers of these two herbs in a glass of warm almond or coconut milk,

well all I can say is that you've just arrived at holiday nirvana.

Recommended ingredients for Golden Milk

2 cups of almond or coconut milk

1 teaspoon dried turmeric (or one-half inch fresh turmeric thinly sliced or diced, buy at Whole Foods)

1 teaspoon dried ginger (or one-half inch fresh ginger thinly sliced or diced)

2 teaspoons ghee (optional, try it with or without and decide for yourself)

A sprinkle of black pepper (this enhances the bioavailability of turmeric)

Honey to taste...

Peel both the turmeric and ginger, then grate them finely into a mortar or dish. Spoon the ghee into the mortar or dish and grind the ghee into the turmeric and ginger with your pestle until they form a fine paste.

Pour the coconut milk into your glasses and spoon in the paste made with turmeric, ginger and ghee. Turn up the heat to medium-high and warm the ingredients together until the mixture starts to form bubbles on the sides of your pot. Don't let it boil. At that point turn off the heat and cover the saucepan, allowing the turmeric and ginger to steep for a few minutes, about 3. Strain the milk through some type of a strainer into the glasses. Add the honey to taste and continue stirring until it dissolves. Serve this warm with your cat on your lap or your dog at your feet. They might want some too.
